Diana Butler Bass holds a Ph.D. in religious studies from Duke University. She is the author of two critically acclaimed books on religion in Americaincluding Strength for the Journey: A Pilgrimage of Faith in Community, which Publishers Weekly named one of the best books in religion for the year 2002. For a decade, she taught undergraduate religious studies; from 1995-2000, she was a weekly columnist for the New York Times syndicate. As an active Episcopal lay person, she has served on adult education committees at several congregations. For almost two years, she was the Director of Faith Formation at Christ Church (Episcopal) in Alexandria, Virginia.
Currently, she is Senior Research Fellow and Director of the Project on Congregations of Intentional Practice (a Lilly Endowment funded project) at the Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria where she also teaches church history and congregational studies. She and her family are members of the Episcopal Church of the Epiphany in downtown Washington, D.C.
