There are many resources available today for the "inward journey," and each of us has favorite meditative practices and favorite readings. Here are just two 20th century masters of the spiritual life who clearly make the connection between the inward and outward journey:
A Testament of Devotion (Book)
Thomas Kelly, Author. San Francisco: Harper Collins, 1941 (reprint 1996).
It was said that this American Quaker spoke as one who had not just "knowledge about" but "acquaintance with" the Light within. His talk on "The Eternal Now and Social Concern," in this thin volume, was first delivered to Friends in Germany where he was working in 1938. Our social concern, he writes, "is a particularization of the Divine Concern of God for all creation."
The Road to Peace: Writings on Peace and Justice (Book)
Henri J. M. Nouwen, Author. Maryknoll, NY: Orbis Books, 2002.
This collection of Nouwen's writings on peace and justice was edited after his death by John Dear. Nouwen is particularly good at articulating the connection between our internal struggles and the work of reconciliation, and naming the humbling reality that we are often partners in the evil we seek to resist.
