Pathway to Renewal: Practical Steps for Congregations (Book)
Daniel P. Smith, Mary K. Sellon, Authors.
Herndon, VA: Alban Institute, 2008.
Written by two pastors and church consultants, and applying "adaptive leadership" to staff and lay leaders, Pathway to Renewal identifies three phases of organizational development that help renew congregations and enable them to implement change.
Phase one is "developing readiness" by preparing leaders to guide the church in new directions. This begins with forming a "germination group" of lay leaders, authorized by the board, which examines felt needs and issues, explores new possibilities, and develops momentum for creative change. The board appoints a renewal task force that assesses the congregation's current situation, studies relevant renewal materials, and brings assessments and recommendations to the board.
Phase two involves creating a "guiding vision" through a process that involves church boards and committees, church staff, and all interested congregants. A board-appointed vision team guides the congregation through a visioning process and synthesizes information and discussion. It guides the congregation through steps that organize future work, deepen the congregation's relationship with God, and develop the commitment to live out the new vision. A detailed strategy for implementing the vision is then adopted, and a system of accountability is created.
The third phase involves "living into the vision." A "balcony team" is created to maintain the big picture of how the congregation is re-aligned with the new vision. It tracks progress in six areas: new initiatives, existing ministries, congregational care, spiritual formation, staff development, and lay leadership development
This inspiring and well-planned book will empower leaders as they explore adaptive change processes in their congregations.
