Connecting to God: Nurturing Spirituality Through Small Groups (Book)
Corinne Ware, Author.  Herndon, VA: Alban Institute, 1997.

This book addresses the problem that spirituality is a mystery that does not automatically come as a result of loyalty to church, sustained activity, and moral behavior. It provides a model for developing a spiritual life through the interaction of a small group.

Detailed advice for organizing spiritual formation groups is given. A recommended agenda for meetings includes beginning with centering, trying different ways of prayer, studying the various types of spirituality, and sharing individual spiritual experience. Concrete suggestions are accompanied by a plentiful list of resources for further study. Safeguards against possible failure of such groups are listed: attention to administrative nuts and bolts; a collegial rather than a teacher-student format; a seasoned convener who listens; prevention of possible detrimental behavior by group members; and accountability to clergy, church, and the larger congregation.

Congregations interested in a plan for fostering spiritual growth will find very practical answers here.
