The Answer to How Is Yes compels us to attend to those ideals and commitments that truly matter—both in our individual lives and in our institutions and communities.

Peter Block, founding partner of the Designed Learning training firm, points out that we often divert ourselves from our ideals by endless attention to "how" questions: "How do you do it?" "How long will it take?" "How do you measure it?" Such questions emphasize task to the exclusion of purpose and are ultimately disempowering. More challenging and appropriate questions: "What's my contribution to this problem?" "What crossroad am I facing in life?" "What commitment am I willing to make?" These questions concern values, purpose, context, and choice.

Acknowledging that "acting on what matters is...anything but controlled and predictable," Block notes that when we choose, we inevitably and paradoxically exchange problems. Yet we can avoid neither the necessity of choosing nor accountability for our choices. This book is for persons who are open to a renewed perspective as they re-assess personal vocation and mission.
