The Catholic Experience of Small Christian Communities (Book)
Bernard J. Lee S.M., Author.
Mahwah, NJ: Paulist Press, 2000.
Through surveys and personal interviews, the author and his research team of theologians and social scientists reflect on small Catholic Christian communities and their significance for church renewal. One in twenty adult Catholics belongs to a small Christian community that comes together around prayer, scripture study, faith sharing, and spirituality. The majority of those surveyed are active members of their parishes or become more active after joining a small community.
The surveys also show how these small communities build church communities by providing a safe place for adult Catholics to articulate their faith and to connect to life issues. Theological reflections and pastoral recommendations will help pastors and pastoral teams guide the small groups within their parish and encourage their development. For the small Christian communities themselves, the author recommends areas for needed growth and development. This book will challenge local church leaders to be open to new ways of "being church". It offers real hope that this new way of "being church" can transform and renew current parish structures.
