Shepherd’s Centers of America (Organization)

Congregations interested in developing a center for the aging will find the Shepherd’s Centers of America (SCA) to be a valuable resource. Over 100 Shepherd’s Centers exist in the U.S., each dedicated to providing older adults with opportunities for service to others, self-expression, meaningful work, and friendship. They also help older adults to remain in independent living situations as long as they choose.

Typical programs may include classes in foreign languages, local history, computers, or exercise. Service opportunities might include such diverse activities as delivering meals or repairing houses. It is a ministry by and for participating older adults; decisions are made locally and programs vary by location. The SCA helps organizations to establish new centers and support existing centers.

The Web site features information on starting a center; an explanation of the relevant training provided for leaders, staff, and board members; access to nearly 30 SCA publications and videos (the "Program Model" is available for free); and links to other sites for older adults.
