Faith-Based Management: Leading Organizations That Are Based on More Than Just Mission (Book)
Peter C. Brinckerhoff, Author.  John Wiley & Sons, Inc., 1999.

This management resource is geared to the peculiar needs of churches and other not-for-profit public service organizations, recognizing that leadership style, vision casting, financial planning, marketing, and organizational structure take on a distinctive color in the faith-based organization. The "faith" factor adds a complex variable not present in either for-profit or secular not-for-profit organizations. Peter Brinckerhoff lays out "seven characteristics of successful faith-based organizations," gleaned from years of consulting experience in the non-profit arena.

While this book is an easy read, its unmistakable message is that only hard wrestling with basic questions ("Who are we and what are we about?") will put faith-based management on solid ground. That spiritual growth requires courage is as true of organizations as it is of individuals, but for the manager who is up to the challenge, the "Questions for Discussion" at the end of each chapter provide vital tools. "For Example" and "Hands On" sections sprinkled liberally throughout the book offer case studies and suggestions that inspire mission and service ideas. While predominantly Christian, the illustrations include examples from the Jewish community and from other faith groups.

This book is not for theoreticians and arm-chair managers; it is a "where the rubber hits the road" resource kit for those willing to work at the dialectic between faith and action.
