Starting and Managing a Nonprofit Organization: A Legal Guide, 4th Edition (Book)
Bruce R. Hopkins, Author.  San Francisco, CA: Jossey-Bass, 2004.

"The law affecting nonprofit organizations is volatile." With that premise in mind, Bruce Hopkins sets out in this fourth edition of Starting and Managing a Nonprofit Organization: A Legal Guide to "translate the intricacies of the law (for nonprofits)…and to make them understandable to non-lawyer-managers of 'nonprofits'…"

Laid out in a readable style, each chapter is designed to have some practical information for those just entering the nonprofit world as well as the nonprofit veteran. It may be read from cover to cover, or readers may pick and choose the chapters that apply to their particular situation. In the preface, (a must read) the author outlines the content of each chapter and its importance to the nonprofit world. He also provides a very helpful reading plan for the nonprofit novice.

In the first four chapters, Hopkins presents a philosophy of the nonprofit movement. Chapters 5 through 19 detail some of the more important laws that govern the nonprofit organization. In chapters 9 and 12 Hopkins addresses two "hot-button" issues: (1) corporate sponsorship of nonprofits and (2) the problems and potentials surrounding use of the Internet for a nonprofit organization. In the final two chapters, Hopkins looks into the future world of nonprofits.

Hopkins’ book belongs on the shelf of every nonprofit. It is an excellent resource for those contemplating the formation of a nonprofit organization and for those who manage or sit on the board of a nonprofit organization.
