Gathering the Seekers (Web Resource)
Premised on the view that small groups can serve as significant channels for spiritual empowerment and congregational vitality, this online tutorial presents a model for developing and sustaining "NET" groups in churches.
A NET (Nurturing Experience Theologically) group enables participants to minister more effectively in their families, workplaces, churches, and neighborhoods; to further their biblical understanding; to connect their religious values with their daily lives; and to help renew their congregations and communities. As a NET group participant, one commits to meeting with others at regular intervals and to certain disciplines—such as creating a spiritual autobiography, journaling, devotional reading, theological reading and discussion, and developing "Ministry Experience Reports" (grounded in one’s reflections on life’s challenges).
Author James Newby provides a rationale for forming and sustaining NET groups and suggests a process for getting such groups started. Included are discussion questions, a bibliography of classical and modern theological readings, and samples of a spiritual autobiography and a Ministry Experience Report. Guidelines for NET group leaders are featured as well.
Congregational leaders who would like to enhance spiritual growth by introducing or expanding small groups might consider Gathering the Seekers as a place to start.
