Preaching Today: Sorting It Out (Web Resource)

G. Lee Ramsey explores the array of approaches and resources available in sermon preparation and delivery. This Web resource, based on an essay from the Congregational Resource Guide book, discusses sermon sources and content, the form of the sermon, and new options and voices in preaching today.

Ramsey overviews the five primary homiletical sources: Scripture, theology, the congregation's life, the world, and the preacher's life. Scripture, in particular, receives substantial attention. Ramsey outlines the "random" approach (where the preacher decides from week to week what parts of Scripture to engage), the "thematic" approach (where the preacher uses Scripture to explore such themes as forgiveness or discipleship), and the "lectionary" approach (where the preacher draws upon a set of lessons chosen by ecumenical or denominational authorities). Ramsey also discusses other sources, offering resources and suggestions for each.

The author believes that sermon forms should be aligned with their content and intent; a sermon that announces grace, for example, "can reflect joy and freedom in tone and organizational patterns." He examines the "new homiletic," through which a sermon creates experience even as it delivers a message. And he touches upon new voices in preaching today—from women, African Americans, Asians, and persons with disabilities.

Preachers seeking a solid overview and basic resource suggestions on preaching will be well served by this essay. It is available as both an online tutorial and a print-ready download. A search engine within the resource is especially helpful.
