Lending Your Leadership: How Pastors Are Redefining Their Role in Community Life (Book)
Nelson Granade, Author.  Herndon, VA: Alban Institute, 2006.

Nelson Granade challenges church leaders to move beyond the congregation and into the larger community, where he contends they have unique contributions to make.

After acknowledging that pastors no longer have the instant access to public involvement they once did, he suggests how pastoral skills—such as knowing how to ask sensitive yet probing questions, being able to discern the spiritual dimensions of problems, and helping people listen to one another—are skills that could be applied to great benefit in the larger community.

Writing as someone who has expanded his own ministry into the community, Granade offers his own experience to show why such involvement is important, how it can bring about significant and positive community change, and how other pastors can do it.

In Lending Your Leadership he describes both the obstacles and openings for community involvement, with an emphasis on the new opportunities for involvement being made possible by various cultural shifts. He then presents a biblical model for community involvement, and shows how pastoral skills have direct application to community needs.

Pastors wishing to extend their influence into the community would find this book both inspiring and helpful.
