Pursuing the Full Kingdom Potential of Your Congregation (Book)
George Bullard, Author.
St. Louis, MO: Chalice Press, 2006.
Pulling together a lifetime of work on congregational redevelopment, George Bullard offers congregations a comprehensive approach to what he calls a "spiritual strategic journey." Through this journey, congregations can begin to realize their "full Kingdom potential."
From the outset, Bullard (executive coach of the Lake Hickory Leadership Communities for the Baptist State Convention of North Carolina) makes it clear that a church's "full Kingdom potential" is not the equivalent of church growth, health, success, or even faithfulness. Rather, "full" means comprehensive and thorough; "Kingdom" means focused on the reign of God; and "potential" means that which is impossible except for the promise of God.
Much of the material in this book is tied to the "Spiritual Strategic Journey" online tutorial, available through the Congregational Resource Guide. Each chapter of the book, however, also offers an executive summary, a "coaching break," a set of "coaching insights," and opportunities for personal reflection.
Each chapter also examines congregational redevelopment processes—including getting prepared, cultivating relationships, addressing congregational issues, understanding church life cycles, engaging in discernment, exploring future storytelling, and considering congregational choices. For Bullard, these processes prove most fruitful when approached in a "chaordic" (combining "chaotic" and "orderly") manner.
Bullard concludes with advice on coaching congregations and a discussion of how denominational organizations can best use this book.
Especially when used in tandem with the "Spiritual Strategic Journey" online tutorial, this book provides the tools for assessing and developing congregational vitality in the service of God's Kingdom.
