Part 2 — Financial Health Checklist
Print this page. Place a checkmark beside each item you completed. The goal of this exercise is to be able to place a checkmark beside each question, noting that the task has been completed satisfactorily. Items you cannot check need to be transferred to the action plan in part three.
  1. ___ I have a spending plan (budget) I am comfortable with. It reflects living within my means, a plan to pay off consumer debt (if any), and an adequate monetary response to God.
Note: If you do not have a spending plan, complete the financial planning worksheets in the appendix to this lesson. If at the end of this exercise you are still unable to check question one due to a heavy debt load or other circumstance, contact a respected colleague or supervisor about what to do next. Or contact a reputable credit counseling service for help.
  2. ___ I have a current will and/or living trust. It reflects my current financial and family circumstances, and my Christian values of loving God, my family and the world that God seeks to redeem.
Note: If you have not completed or updated these documents, consult an attorney. Many denominational foundations have personnel, resources or relationships with competent professionals to help you. Some even provide financial assistance to complete these tasks. If you do not have recourse to help, you are welcome to contact Design For Ministry at info@designforministry.com with your questions.
  3. ___ I have an estate plan in place that I reviewed and updated within the last three years. It will adequately provide for any dependents who may survive my death, and anticipates the cost of retirement and increased medical care as I age.
Note: If you do not have a recently updated financial plan, you need to develop a relationship with a financial planner who respects your values. Again, many denominations provide resources and referrals. Start there. As noted previously, however, if you are currently without assistance in this area, by writing to info@designforministry.com, you can obtain a referral to get you started.
